Building Meditation

I’m in stasis right now. I really want to get moving but life is trying to teach me the art of patience, waiting for the moment, waiting for enough time to do the millions of things I need to do. I’ve been really busy lately and, frankly, I could do with an extra two days a week – 1 for work and 1 for home! I know – who doesn’t need that?! Why do we live in such a fast-paced society? Why do we LET ourselves live in such a fast-paced society? It has been proven that the amount of stress we are under is unhealthy and largely self-inflicted, but there are things we want to do, need to do, have to have, should have…it’s never ending! It can make it very hard to focus; cutting through the chaos and muddy vision to see what is actually important.

I had to have a very minor op last week, but unfortunately I had some problems after so I was forced to do nothing, be housebound and a little bed-bound from the pain too. Well, actually I used the time to catch up with my accounts, distracting myself from the discomfort! When else was I going to do it?!? 😉 I know I’m not alone in this feeling, that when we give ourselves (or are forced to give ourselves) 5 minutes peace, we feel so guilty that we should be doing something that we actually don’t allow ourselves that time to chill out, heal, recover, re-group. I sometimes think we are all fools. We want to live longer to do all the things we want to do, but in reality we’re doing so much that we run ourselves into the ground and will ultimately wear ourselves out, become ill and pop our clogs at an early age, if we’re not careful!

I know that meditation is a good way forward for me. I have tried, not often enough, and have found that my brain and body is much happier if I have sat and meditated for a time. Heck, even the kids see a difference in me! So much so that my eldest daughter (aged 9) wants to do it. It’s not a regular thing though as, like with all of us, there always seems to be something else ‘more important’. Well, it’s time to think differently, folks! For everything else to function better, I need to function better. This is important.
So, I want to improve and allow myself some time every day to meditate, which can be hard in our house! However, I think that, for those of you like myself, who have a little or no practice of meditation, there is an easy way to squeeze it in somewhere so, I’m setting myself a challenge and would love you to join me, so here it is:

Week 1
Set an alarm on your phone to go off twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening, planned at a time when you don’t have anything really pressing (so not whilst getting the kids ready for school or making dinner, you get the idea!). When that alarm goes off, providing you’re not driving (!) stop whatever you’re doing, and breath deeply and slowly, with eyes closed for 20 seconds. Then, carry on as you were. Easy, right?

Week 2
Every day, when the same alarm goes off, stop, close your eyes and breath slowly for 2 minutes. Then carry on doing your stuff.

Week 3
This time, it will be for 5 minutes – are you catching my drift here?!

Week 4
Can we manage 10 minutes, or am I feeling a little ambitious?!

By building a space into the routine slowly, for very short intervals, it will become easier to keep doing. If you feel calmer and more focused after 20 seconds, what will it feel like after 2 minutes, 5 minutes, 10 minutes…?

Try it; ‘Building Meditation’. It doesn’t have to take up all of your time, just a little can make a difference.
