Over the last few years – having previously been the first to get a cold and have it almost continuously from September to March! – I have been using a remedy that really does seem to kill a cold…DEAD… at least 9/10 times! That 1/10 is normally when I have missed the “first signs” window, though it’s still extremely effective.
“So why haven’t I heard of this amazing remedy if it’s so good?” I hear you say. Well, firstly it’s a natural remedy (so not available over the counter, funding “big pharma”) and secondly it tastes pretty blurgh! However, if you Google the recipe, you will often find it in some form and it’s advocation as a winner. Having described it to friends and clients, the few who have been brave enough to adhere to my madness and try it have agreed; it’s nasty, it works! So, as I keep being asked about it, here is the recipe in all it’s glory and reasons for each ingredient.
The Cold Banisher!
- 1/2 teaspoon ground or fresh ginger (or fresh grated is better!)
- 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon ground or fresh turmeric (preferably organic for potency)
- 1/2 teaspoon coconut oil
- 1/2 teaspoon honey (raw or organic is the best)
- 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar (go for “with the mother” labelled ones, more effective)
- 1 tablespoon water
- In a glass, blend the spices with the honey and coconut oil to form a paste. Mix this with the apple cider vinegar until the paste has “dissolved”, then add the water and mix a little more.
- Drink the mixture down and follow with another glass of water (this will help with the taste and burn of the cayenne pepper!)
- Take this 2-3 times a day from the moment you feel that first tell-tale itch in your nose or back of your throat and it should stop the cold in its tracks. If you do miss this window, still take it as soon as you can because it will speed up your recovery.
So, why those ingredients?
Ginger – well known as a natural anti-inflammatory. This means it will help to reduce inflammation in the throat, nasal passages and sinuses, as well as ease aches and pains in the body, which can often come with colds. Ginger also helps with brain function so can reduce the “foggy head” that can also be a cold symptom. Finally, it is effective against bacteria, so can help reduce the chances of a bacterial infection in the sinuses (sinusitis).
Cayenne pepper – known to help break up and reduce mucus, so helping to reduce congestion in the respiratory system (nose, throat and lungs). It also stimulates the circulation and so boosts the lymphatic system (which is a major part of your body’s defense system) and helps the body to detoxify. It is another effective pain reliever, particularly for the joints, and anti-bacterial so fights infection.
Turmeric – Curcumin is the powerful active ingredient of turmeric, known for it’s strong anti-inflammatory (working at a molecular level) and antioxidant effects. Curcumin can can boost serotonin and dopamine in the brain so helps you feel mentally uplifted.
Coconut oil – coconut oil is known to be anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal, helping to prevent infection. It also boosts the immune system and helps the body to absorb the curcumin from the turmeric, making it more effective.
Honey – is a natural antibiotic but doesn’t damage the good bacteria in your stomach. On top of this it is a rich antioxidant and helps to ease coughs and (particularly in combination with coconut oil) sooth a sore throat. Oh, and it makes the mixture taste that much better!
Apple cider vinegar – powerful against bacteria to prevent infection by making the body/blood more alkaline (much of our modern diet is very acidic which is bad for the body and immune system).
Water – helps hydration (very important to fight illness) and simply makes helps it taste a bit better (kind of!) and mute the cayenne pepper burn!
